👂Overheard at All Hands👂

Dear Creators,

Did you know that research shows that “the act of performing a craft is incompatible with worry, anger, obsession, and anxiety.”?! Yup, according to a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “Crafts make you concentrate and focus on the here and now and distract you from everyday pressures and problems. They’re stress busters in the same way that meditation, deep breathing, visual imagery, and watching fish are.”

Research and fish aside, I’m guessing you knew this already, at least intuitively, and have even experienced it firsthand. It certainly is a recurring theme in the sentiments I hear expressed in each of our workshops. Speaking of which, hearing what comes out of people’s mouths while they’re making something at All Hands is one of the true highlights of my work. When I can, I like to quickly jot down your joyful outbursts in my journal or on the notes app on my phone so as not to forget them. I especially like to read through the growing list of positive, unscripted feedback in those moments when being a small business owner gets tough. These words remind me that I’m on the right track.

Below are some, but not all, from that list. The very last one was actually written to me in an email by one of our annual members. I feel that I cannot thank you all enough for your continued support and encouragement. 💖

“The creative energy is so good in here.”

“I love this project!”

“This place is the coolest! I’m so thankful it’s here.”

“Thanks for creating this amazing space.”

“This is so fun!”

“The snacks are amazing!”

“I do a disservice to myself if I get upset that it doesn’t turn out the way I intended, instead of taking joy in the way it did turn out.”

“This is literally the wildest thing I’ve ever done. I feel so sexy and crazy.”

“It really makes me appreciate all that goes into handmade goods.”

“It’s a little jagged, but so am I.”

“This made my whole weekend!”

“It was a great date night!”

“It’s lovely, this atmosphere. I love being in here.”

“This is great stress relief.”

“Every workshop that I’ve taken here has been infinitely satisfying.”

“All Hands is a space for community and creation, and, for me, a necessary respite from dealing with all the uncertainties that make up my life now. The workshops give me a moment to press pause on everything I don’t know and be present and meditate on what I’m making and who I’m making it for.”
