Overcoming perfectionism

I like to begin my brass wall hangings workshop by asking everyone to go around the table and share their name, where they're from and something that helps them overcome perfectionism. Hearing that third request inevitably triggers a collective sigh immediately followed by laughter and nods of recognition.

Perfectionism is a topic creative women like ourselves can bond over quite quickly, I've found. It's gotten the best of us all at one point or another. So I love collecting effective antidotes to perfectionism that we've each discovered or developed over time. Some responses I've gotten in the workshops include:
  • reminding yourself that perfection doesn't actually exist,
  • learning to approach your creative projects with playfulness and curiosity and not judgement,
  • falling in love with the *process*,
  • delighting in the charming, organic nature of something handmade
  • embracing the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi

A question that has been especially helpful at allowing me to detach from the immediate results of something I want to try is: 'What would you do if you didn't have to do it perfectly?' This question alone prompted me to realize how many big and little creative dreams I harbor in my heart that I hesitate to act on for fear of not doing them perfectly. Releasing the need to be perfect, I unlock fresh waves of energy and moxie to just do the thing. And that's when the magic happens. ✨
Have you ever felt this way? What gives you the freedom, the daring, the audacity, the chutzpah, to throw perfectionism to the wind? I'd love to know. 🥰

To finding the beauty in imperfection,
Kendra
