Kaitlin Bonifacio has added an awesome new offering to her natural dyeing workshop series! Learn to extract a beautiful sunshine yellow hue from leftover onion skins. Use onion dye to color lengths of muslin which can be mounted as finished wall hangings or put towards any other textile project you may have in the works.

In this workshop, we will:

  • learn the basics of mordanting and Kaitlin's recipe to prepare natural fabric for dyes
  • walk through the process of creating the most potent natural dyes
  • prepare muslin with basic shibori and tie dye style resist patterns
  • dye muslin, reveal patterns, rinse, and heat set
  • optional: mount on driftwood for wall hanging

The following supplies are included:

  • pre-mordanted 12" x 24" length of muslin ready to dye
  • dye materials and equipment
  • supplies for shibori and tie dye pattern creation
  • driftwood and mounting materials for creating a wall hanging

You will go home with:

  • one hand-dyed, bright yellow 12" x 36" length of muslin wall hanging, mounted on driftwood
  • detailed worksheet explaining how to replicate fabric preparation and natural dye process at home

Kaitlin studied the ancient art of shibori in both Hawaii and Japan before relocating to Santa Cruz, California. A mother of two and owner of the Yuzu & Rose line of Shibori home and family products, she enjoys the magical process of hand dyeing, the challenge of creating natural, plant-based dyes of her own, and the joy of sharing her products and techniques with the community.
