Shibori Indigo Dyeing - Level II

  • All Hands Workshops 514a Front Street Santa Cruz, CA, 95060 United States (map)

For those who have experienced our introductory shibori indigo dyeing workshop, we invite you back to further explore more traditional and complex techniques of the craft and create a lovely shibori driftwood wall hanging. We will cover stitched shibori, arashi pole wrapping shibori, and pebble binding shibori and work with natural linen fabric and locally found driftwood.

In this workshop, we will:

  • study and practice three traditional shibori techniques - stitched shibori with needle and thread, arashi pole wrapping, and kumo spiderweb shibori with pebbles

  • mix a vat of indigo

  • design, bind and dye a 12"x36" piece of linen

  • attach final dyed piece to driftwood to complete the wall hanging

The following supplies are included:

  • driftwood

  • linen

  • dye and equipment

You will go home with:

  • A 12"x36" linen and driftwood Shibori wall hanging

Depending on the complexity of each student's design, we will likely have extra time to free dye additional items. Please bring any small items made of natural materials such as cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, hemp and wool that you would like to experiment with!
